July was a month of many media legends passing.

Hugh Downs, the long time host of ABC News’ 20/20 passed away at 99 in the year 2020; and ironically retired from the program in 1999. Downs was known for other non news programs and was known as the panelist for the black and white TV game show What’s My Line?

TV Maverick, Ed Ansin passes at 82

The man who told The Boston Globe he would die to his boots passed away on July 26th. The owner of WHDH-TV and WLVI-TV in Boston and WSVN-TV in Miami passed away; leaving his children to take management of the stations. Known as a broadcasting maverick, he had clashes with NBC over affiliation in Miami in the late 1980s and in Boston four years ago. His passing marks Ed Ansin the only individual owner of any major TV station in the U.S. When acquiring WHDH-TV, the news reports at the time stated the new owner “will have a continued focus on the community” of which Ansin’s commitment continues to this day. Regis Philbin, TV talk star, passes at 88 years old

The famous morning show talk show host passed away on July 25th, per to family release. He had been a struggling TV personality, stopping in multiple markets hopping between the midwest and Los Angeles, before returning home to New York City in 1983 to launch a 9:00 morning show at WABC-TV. Within 5 years, Disney’s Buena Vista saw something that the show could become national; and with arraignment with Buena Vista, the show was carried nationally to over several hundred affiliates. He retired from the program in 2011. He held the Guiness Book of Records for having the most screen time. (Ironically Hugh Downs had a similar record.) (Head to People Magazine)

Long time WLS-TV Meteorologist, Jerry Taft, passes away at 77

Long time Chicago ABC7 weatherman Jerry Taft, passed away at 77. He worked for the station for over 3 decades. He had been known to not have a filter, and sometimes his laughing fits prevented him to finish or even start a weather segment. (Head to ABC7 Chicago)

President Trump announced in mid July he would bring back the 5PM ET briefings for the reason it was providing “record ratings in the history of cable news”; and neglect to state if it provided the public reassurance the federal government is doing everything in it’s power to prevent the spread of the novel virus.
